ONGOING - Historical Society Bicentennial Exhibit Location: Schenectady County Historical Society


32 Washington Ave, Schenectady

Description: The exhibit, entitled "A Most Beautiful Land," celebrates the 200th anniversary of Schenectady County with an exploration of the complete history of Schenectady County and its inhabitants from the indigenous Kanein'kehake (Mohawk) community, the Dutch settlers, and all the immigrant communities that called Schenectady home in the twentieth century. It will also explore the many facets of their economic success including early industries, trade along the Mohawk and the later Erie Canal.

Time: Saturdays, 9am-1pm

Location: Along Upper Union St. from Lakewood Ave. to Palmer Ave.

Description: Celebrate Schenectady County's agricultural heritage with the Upper Union Street Farmers' Market! Strictly local seasonal produce (fruits and vegetables), meat, honey and maple products, baked goods, bedding plants (vegetables, annuals, perennials and herbs). Occasional special events including entertainment, cooking demonstrations and information from Schenectady County Cooperative Extension.

October 4-10 - National Cornell Cooperative Week and National 4-H Week

Description: National CCE Week is an annual celebration to inform New Yorkers about Cornell Cooperative Extension educational programs, and how these programs help people improve their lives and communities everyday. National 4-H Week is a time to celebrate, promote and share the 4-H movement in Schenectady County. Dates and times of specific events during the week to be determined.

 

October 8 - Cornell Cooperative Extension, Schenectady County Annual Meeting

Time and Location: 5:30 - 9:00pm

Location: Schenectady County Community College

Description: The CCE,SC annual meeting will celebrate the close of another successful year, announce newly-elected board members, and recognize the accomplishments of volunteers in 2009.

Price: The meeting is free; however there is a small charge for the dinner portion of this event.

October 17 - Upper Union Street BID Harvest Fest

Time: 10am-3pm

Location: Along Upper Union St. from Lakewood Ave. to Palmer Ave.

Description: A community harvest celebration! Upper Union Street businesses decorated their storefronts with scarecrows and other fall decor. Activities include a Farmers' Market, live musical entertainment, activities for children, art show, gourmet market place, and more! The event is presented in conjunction with Schenectady County's Farm and Foliage Day.

November 21 - Gazette Holiday Parade

Time: 5:00pm

Location: Downtown Schenectady

Description: Long regarded as the biggest night-time parade in the northeast, this family tradition has been bringing Schenectady families out to greet the holiday season since 1969. Nearly 40,000 people turn out each year. Bands, lighted floats, marchers, and of course, Santa Claus! This year's theme is, of course, Schenectady County's Bicentennial!

Throughout December - Upper Union Street Holiday Celebration 2009

Location: Upper Union Street, Schenectady

Description: A celebration of the Christmas customs of Holland! The festivities will include the arrival of Sinterklaas (the Bishop St. Nicholas), a fifty-foot-high evergreen decorated for Christmas, musicians and story tellers, coloring pages, trivia contests, and more! More events will be added as the holidays approach!

December 3 - 6th Annual Magic & Melodies Celebration
